In the 2012 season, the Blue Jays came close to the dubious honour of not having a single 10-game winner on their pitching staff. Brandon Morrow finally hit 10 on the final day of the season. The Blue Jays wound up in fourth place under John Farrell with a paltry 73 victories. Flash forward to 2014. Right now there are five teams that possess four pitchers who have at least 10 victories. All of them are currently holding down playoff positions. The three in the American League are Kansas City, the Angels, and Seattle while in the NL, its Washington and the L.A. Dodgers. In the AL East Baltimore leads the way with three, with a chance at a fourth in Miguel Gonzalez who is sitting on eight wins. Tampa Bay has two ten-game winners in the traded David Price and Jake Odorizzi and has the possibility of four with Alex Cobb at nine wins and Chris Archer at eight. If the Rays get four they will be the only team with that number likely to miss the postseason. In other words, if you have four 10-game winners, youre almost guaranteed to get your ticket punched to the playoffs. The point of all this is, the Blue Jays have a decent shot at becoming the only team this season to have five 10-game winners, just two years after they had only one. Mark Buehrle has 11 victories and R.A. Dickey has 12, while Marcus Stroman, Drew Hutchison and J.A. Happ each have nine. With three weeks left in the regular season, odds are each of the latter trio will win one of his last three or four starts. Kansas City is the only other staff will a shot at having five 10-game winners. But lefty Danny Duffy, who has eight, had to come out of Saturdays game with the Yankees in the Bronx with a sore shoulder. He was due for an MRI and could be shut down for the season leaving the Royals stuck at four 10-gamers. Clearly, the more 10-game winners you have the greater your odds of making the playoffs. But two teams stick out because they have been able to contend with so few. Cleveland is still in Wild Card contention in the American League despite having a 14-game winner in Corey Kluber and no one else approaching 10 victories. In the National, Pittsburgh is holding down the second Wild Card slot with Edinson Volquez at 11 victories and no one else reasonably close to 10. The Giants are another interesting case. They have still got a chance to win the NL West and are currently holding the first Wild Card. Madison Bumgarner is having a tremendous season with 17 wins. Tim Lincecum has 10, but was just shifted to the bullpen. I decided to take this a little farther and look back at the last five World Series winners. Boston had four pitchers on its staff who at least 10 wins, headed up by Jon Lester with 15. The 2009 Yankees had only three, but C.C Sabathia won 19 and the Yanks also had Mariano Rivera. In 2010, the Giants had three led by Lincecums 16 wins and the 2011 St. Louis Cardinals had four including 11 by ex-Jay Chris Carpenter. But the stand-alone staff in terms of victories by starters came from the 2012 San Francisco Giants. They had five starters with at least 10 wins, including Matt Cain and Bumgarner with 16 wins apiece. Barry Zito had 15, Ryan Vogelsong 14 and Lincecum 10. What does the Blue Jays potentially finishing with five ten-game winners signify? Probably not a playoff position at this point. But it does indicate a reversal of fortune in terms of injuries to the pitching staff which has devastated the Blue Jays the past few seasons. Hurtin Cubs The Blue Jays catch a bit of a break in their upcoming interleague series at Rogers Centre with the reeling Cubs. Two of Chicagos better players are injured and will miss the series. Shortstop Starlin Castro could be done for the season with a high ankle sprain, and first baseman slugger Anthony Rizzo has a lower back strain and is out for another week or so. However on Wednesday night in the series finale, the Jays will be facing one of the Cubs rising stars in 24-year-old right hander Kyle Hendricks, who is 6-1 with a 2.02 ERA. Incidently, the Cubs and Phillies are the only two clubs this season without a 10-game winner and both are in last place in their respective divisions in the National League. Up and Coming The New York Mets decided against making right-hander Noah Syndergaard - a key piece in the R.A Dickey trade - a September call-up. There is no serious problem. They briefly considered bringing him up as a reliever (like the Jays with Aaron Sanchez) but ultimately decided his career-high 138 innings this season at Triple-A Las Vegas was enough. Syndergaard led the Pacific Coast League this season with 148 strikeouts and gave up only 11 homers in a hitters league, where he had a 4.86 ERA. Hell be up next year, count on it.
